A Closer Look At Optimum
Hello everyone! Gmum and welcome to my post dedicated to examining Optimum. I first did a very rudimentary overview of the project quite recently, but that did not do the intricacies of the operation justice. Today we dive right in and explore what’s going on under the hood, the goals and products, as well as the funding and big-brained team of Optimum. We have a lot of ground to cover in this digestible explanation, so let’s get started.
1️⃣ Intro: As pictured above, Optimum is “High-Performance Memory for the World Computer,”- meaning blockchains. They are a modular and blockchain agnostic infrastructure layer that allows for efficient scalability through their decentralized data storage solutions. There are two flagship products that the project offers to further its goals: OptimumP2P and OptimumDeRAM.
The former increases speed and throughput, decreasing latency and allowing for network scalability. The P2P messaging protocol allows for gossiping between node operating peers to be faster and more efficient by fracturing the data into unique shards. Any duplicated or redundant data is reduced in size, also reducing the network bandwidth. All of this is done through an API call on the existing blockchain node infrastructure.
The latter furthers these initiatives by acting as a blockchain’s Random Access Memory, similar to a regular computer, giving real-time read & write access to its current state. Both solutions rely on Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC)- developed at the prestigious MIT, to achieve their purposes.
2️⃣ Funding: The project held two funding rounds, with the first being held at the end of February (raising an undisclosed amount at the time- however, industry giants like Sandeep Nailwal of Polygon were early Angel investors), the second was held this April and during that funding round they raised $11 million.
3️⃣ Community: The community is currently somewhat small (considering the scope of what is being built here), but growing, currently boasting about 64k followers on Twitter and 252,444 members in their Discord.
4️⃣ Team: In a refreshing turn for a web3 project, the core team is fully doxed- and they come wielding some serious credentials. Co-founder Muriel Medard is a professor at MIT and is also a co-founder of the RLNC technology that is fueling Optimum, satellites and other IoT projects. Co-founder Dr. Kishori Konwar is a data scientist specializing in distributed systems, coding theory and AI. The third co-founder, Kent Lin oversees the adoption and ecosystem growth chapter and also oversees fundraising efforts. We are in extremely capable hands here.
5️⃣ Wrapping up: If you read this far, I appreciate it.
